2020 was the worst year for commercial loan growth since the Great Recession. This downtrend continued into January, with total deal volume excluding Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans contracting month over month. While rates charged on new and renewed commercial loans have historically increased in January, pricing this month declined across most segments. Despite near-term loan growth headwinds, many banks have expressed a renewed sense of optimism for prospects in the second half of the year. Nonperforming loans have stabilized in recent months, reflecting in part an improved economic outlook.
